THIS CONTEST IS NOW OVER – THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR ENTERING. Remember last month when I swooned over my chic new glass drinking straw – with the roomy diameter, the cool green deco dots, the sleek wire cleaner? Ahhh…it was love at first sip. Well, the generous folks at GlassDharma contacted me last week to say that they would like to give a Healthy Simple Living reader a $25 gift certificate towards anything in the GlassDharma webstore! Wow…sooooo kind. Now the dilemma will be choosing which glass bling-bling to trick out your smoothies and shakes.

I just keep a recycling bin by every trash can, so I'm more likely to use it!

Thanks to Averie for posting this on FB first of all!

My fave eco tip? There are so many and it seems to depend on where one is in their journey as to which is the most helpful. We use cloth tp and I am amazed now at how many trees are being cut down so we can wipe ourselves. Six years ago when I first heard of someone doing it though, I thought I would never “go that far.” Yet, here we are and I will never go back! I guess that is more of a reduce tip though than a reuse/recycle one.

Most people think I'm a bit crazy for this one because it's a little bit of a hassle. We never get plastic bags at the store (reusable bags) and most times don't even have produce/bulk bags because I have cloth bags from Ecobags. I refuse to buy plastic bags just to line our garbage cans, so I bought a really small can and reuse any small bags we have in the house for lining them. It means some extra trips down to the garage to throw it away, but is so worth it!

Okay, posted on FB now too! Crossing my fingers to win as I've been wanting to try a glass straw forever and just can't justify the expense right now. :)

I reuse glass jars (from salsa, jam, and nut butters) for everything–as drink glasses, smoothie glasses, storing nuts and grains, sprouting, and storing little things like buttons and coins!

Love the idea of glass straws! :)
I think my fav eco tip in terms of the easiest one to implement is to carry Onya bags with me wherever I go. They're reusable bags that fold up into the tiniest little package I've ever seen, and they're made from parachute material so they're super strong and won't break. Plus, they're colorful! No excuse not to have some sort of reusable bag with you.

  • Ionlyliveindreams

I have to say just reusing plastic bags. If you don't they just pile up and pile up.

compost, and turn those scraps into nutrient-rich soil for your plants!=)

My favorite reuse tip is to have water packed with me in a ss or glass bottle when I'm out of the house.

  • jenreed1023

I definitely like the re-using your your plastic bag tip. I try to re-use it as many times as I can. I rinse them out with soapy water and dry on a bottle and voila new baggie.

Every time you use a glass straw it is one less plastic one in a landfill! PLUS there is no leaching of the plastics into the food or beverage! Double win :)

Eco tips: use 1/2 as much detergent in dishwasher and washing machine and it works just as well, make your own cleaners with essential oils and vinegar/water mixture, save plastic food containers to use as seed starters, use the produce bags for picking up after your dogs and emptying the cat litterbox because they will eventually breakdown a lot faster tahn a conventional plastic bag, save all bits and pieces of junk, broken jewelry, milk caps etc to use for kids crafts.

Please enter me in the contest.

I'm vegan! That's my fave eco tip!

I have simplified my cleaning products. Making my own counter top spray in a reusable spray bottle and laundry soap in a 5gallon bucket saves alot of plastics and chemicals.
I FB and tweeted, but not sure those comments registered.

Fancy! Having glass straw bling would help my mission of using less plastic! I have been saving up the Jamba Juice straws to reuse…I like their color and size! I'd sure love to win this give away!

  • Kelly

Have you seen those silicone lids that come on porcelain coffee cups? I carry my lid in my purse and use that instead of a plastic to go lid for coffee, soups or other deli treats. I also reuse old t shirts, yoga pants, etc as hankies. Much better on the nose during cold or allergy season! Get the kids involved, soon these small tries of helping our environment will be second nature to everyone! I'd sure love to win these straws!!
