March 2010: Askinosie Dark Chocolate Giveaway

Askinosie Gourmet Chocolate Box Giveaway

Since receiving my delicious Askinosie sample, I’ve been playing around with the cocoa powder in the kitchen (the chocolate bars mysteriously disappeared somehow ;) .) It smells incredible! I just want to dab it behind my ears and smell the chocolate billowing around me all day long. Ahhh…it has a calming, nurturing effect – LOL.

But seriously, first I made a rich decadent almond milk hot cocoa, reminiscent of Ovaltine with a hint of malty flavor. The kicker was fresh ground chia seed meal. It gives it a thicker body and some nice omega-3 fatty acids to boot. Warmed gently, sprinkled with a bit of fresh cinnamon and YUM! I got this idea from The Spunky Coconut. Thank you Spunky!

Since I like to experiment and I don’t want to make full-size desserts all the time, I have a collection of mini baking molds. I love collecting these and making single serves, not to mention they are so cute!

So I experimented with a raw–ish Tiramisu. The chocolate mousse on the bottom layer is made with Askinosie cocoa and modeled after a raw cacao creme recipe in the Russell James’ Chocolate Recipe Series. The whippy creamy top is a raw recipe adapted from Sweet Gratitude and then I sprinkled with a dusting of Askinosie cocoa powder. Sinfully delicious! (Note my attempt at artsy photography angle below.)

Wonderful to see the detailed information that Askinosie provides:
“We state the bean origin, the bean variety, the percentage of cocoa content, the process (bean to bar), and a choc-o-lot number that our customers can use to trace their chocolate from the origin of the bean through each step to the final product”

Have been wanting to try the cocoa powder for sure! Had a taste if it at Slow Food Nation in 08 and been craving it since. Just discovered your blog thru their posting on FB…glad to have found it!

I love chocolate. I'll have to go and try some Askinosie. I learned a lot about the chocolate making industry. I am glad that they care about the farmers who provide them beans. This is my first time to you site so I am going to go explore some more.

The Del Tambo Nibble bar sounds like my kind of chocolate! 70% dark with cocoa nibs, mmm!

I really want to try their cocoa powders, but I haven't been able to. I love their dark chocolates particularly. Not so much the white chocolate; I'm never a white chocolate fan, even when it's of as amazing quality as Askinosie's. I'd also like to try the nibs.
Did you know that even the plastic the chocolate bars are wrapped in are biodegradable? Somehow, it's made of wood.

i am a big fan of askinosie and i have only known about the company for a couple weeks! i know that they support farmers by doing a direct-trade system and working directly with those farmers in a manner that goes above and beyond fair trade! also, the organic certification process is very expensive for small farmers to hop on board, but the ones askinosie works with use sustainable methods that are unofficially organic. also, their chocolate rocks. how cool is it that they do such a good job that their chocolate has so few ingredients and yet tastes so intensely delish? my favorite bar so far is the 75% soconusco.

I am fascinated by how many days it takes to make chocolate. Also, of interest was that Akinosie is the first small batch chocolate maker in the U.S. to press their own cocoa butter and the only makers of natural cocoa powder.

  • Jacki

First, let me just say wow. wow to the chocolate and wow to this site! This was my first time on your site (found you via simplysugarandglutenfree! Second, the commitment of those “chocolatiers” is amazing. It's so encouraging to see that there are still companies (the few and the proud) who are willing to maintain their standards for health! wooohooo!

  • touchabyebaby

I visited the Askinosie website, and was very impressed with their commitment to the farmers who grow their beans. I wish all food companies would do the same!

  • touchabyebaby

Just read Anna's post… I had overlooked the fact that the bars are made with goat's milk powder! How cool! As one with a lifelong history of intolerance to cow's milk, I definitely appreciate that!

  • chanelleneilson

I read the story of how the company was started and found it really interesting. This guy is passionate about chocolate!

I think it's amazing that you can buy 1 kilo of chocolate. The Davao Kilo Bar would be The best present ever. (I hope Santa is listening…)

I learned that they get to know each of the farmers in person before working with them and I would love to try the dark milk chocolate bar. I did not know that soy free chocolate existed before now. Thank you so much.

I shared this on my facebook. username jennifer lachman

I would love to try out the roasted cocoa nibs and my husband is a HUGE hot chocolate fan, I know he would love this.
I love the story of the beginning, basically, follow your heart, include family and find happiness.

  • Melina

I learned that Akinosie pays more than fair trade to their farmers in Ecuador and use a variety of cacao beans such as Soconusco, Davao, and Del Tambo. I would like to try some of the cacao nibs.

  • http://mutritiousnuffins.blogspot.com/ Meagan

“We find farmers first because farmers are more important to us than the beans.”
WOW – if only every food company was so passionate about each step in the process as Askinosie is! I would try any of their products in a heartbeat! I love how they display all the possible information the consumer could ever want to know RIGHT on the front of their chocolate :)

I was very impressed with the story of how Askinosie came to be. I love to find out about companies motivated not by a profit but by creating the best product possible. So, I've crossed all my fingers and toes in hopes of winning the chocolate bars and natural cocoa powder :)

Also, I wanted to say thank you so much for “outing yourself” last week! I went high raw last October but have continued to consume sparing quantities of meat and dairy. Up until I read your post I thought perhaps the raw food community would kick me out if they knew! Glad to know I'm not the only one :) I'm going to start trying to incorporate grass fed beef, raw milk and uncaged chicken products to my family's diet as well.

I liked their note and was pretty impressed with this fact… The big deal is — we are the first small batch chocolate maker in the U.S. to press our own cocoa butter AND the only makers of natural cocoa powder. Our Natural Cocoa Powder is made right in our factory using the same beans we use to make our dark chocolate
