Vitamix vs Blendtec. Both top of the line professional blenders that have divided the raw food camp for years. On the one side, there are the loyal, steadfast Vitamix lovin’ diehards. On the other, the unwavering, staunch Blendtec devotees…Montagues, Capulets…Hatfields, McCoys… Jets, Sharks…And now Vitamix, Blendtec.
Personally, I own a Blendtec hp3a, but I’ve used the Vitamix 5000 blender extensively when I worked in raw food cafes. They’re both great machines and you truly can’t go wrong with either of them. If you’re undecided, there are fact charts online that compare the two. So instead, I’m just going to tell you what I feel are their pros and cons.
Advantages of the Blendtec and Vitamix Blenders
The Vitamix blender:
- The Vitamix has a handy tamper to push the ingredients around.
- The narrower carafe base comes in useful for smaller portion blending.
- The Vitamix blenders all come with a cushy 7-year warranty.
The Blendtec hp3a Blender:
- The Blendtec hp3a has a wider carafe, good for dry or wet blending.
- It has different program/cycles so you don’t have to “man” the machine if you want varying blending speeds.
- it’s shorter in height, so it fits on most under cabinet countertops.
Disadvantages of the Blendtec and Vitamix Blenders
Vitamix blender:
- The Vitamix doesn’t have variable speed programs. So you can let it run at a constant speed, otherwise you must pulse/change speed manually.
- You need a separate carafe for dry blending and another for wet blending.
- It’s quite tall and while this may seem like a little detail, it does limit where you can store it assembled.
Blendtec hp3a blender:
- The Blendtec doesn’t have a tamper but because it has variable speed programs, it’s not as crucial as it is on the Vitamix. Still, a tamper would be nice.
- The Blendtec used to have an 8-year warranty but now it’s just 3-years.
- The larger carafe base makes it difficult to blend small amounts.
Side Note:
The Vitamix tend to cost more depending on the model. The Blendtec has more horsepower but the difference is negligible in my opinion.
Blendtec or Vitamix?
Frankly, I’m Switzerland. I think both are great, but what recently swayed me to the Blendtec side is there awesome customer service. In January, I sent my 6-year old Blendtec in for service because it was making a funny sound. A few weeks later, my Blendtec arrived at my doorstep – except it wasn’t MY old beat-up, food-stained Blendtec. It was an upgraded, top-of-the-line brand spankin’ new one!
Not only that, but I paid $50 to upgrade to the new 4″ mega blade 96oz behemoth carafe, but instead they sent me both carafes!! Ah, I love Blendtec. In the span of six years, I got two brand new Blendtecs for the price of one.
So bottom line – Vitamix or Blendtec? Either will do good by you…really. But I think the one thing both raw food camps can agree on is that, if you want to graduate to luscious smoothies, creamy soups and RIDICULOUS desserts, a high-power blender does make a difference. It can emulsify. It can whip things light and airy. It can pulverize veggies and nuts sooo smoothly that there’s n’er a trace of the tiniest lump in sight. NICE!
