The Coconut Envelope, Please…

So if you read my last post, you know I was conducting a highly “scientific” taste test comparison between four popular organic coconut oils. And who was the victor??? The winner IS…

… (no surprise) Tropical Traditions! Any company confident enough in their product to send complimentary jars to their customers – well, you KNOW it’s gotta be good! So what set Tropical Traditions apart? For me, it’s the subtle coconutty-ness. It’s not over-powering. The coconut scent is mild and it has a smooth mouth feel. And the coconut flavor doesn’t take over a dish so it won’t necessarily come out tasting coconutty, unless of course that’s the flavor you’re going after.

In a VERY close second place, was The Raw Food World (TRFW) Centrifuged Coconut Oil. Honestly, I probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between TRFW and Tropical Traditions (TT) if blind-folded, but what gave TT the edge for me was the fact that it is all traditionally hand-made (I like that) AND it costs less than TRFW (I like that too!)

Coming in third is the Nutiva brand. The coconut taste is a bit stronger and I’m not wild about the plastic jar. But it’s a good price, so in a pinch I sometimes buy the Nutiva brand as a body moisturizer, that way I can reserve my premium coco oil for eating!

And finally coming in last for me was the Sunfood brand. Now I love David Wolfe and the work he does, but I was a bit disappointed in the coconut oil. It smells really strong of coconuts, it’s a bit grainy and I just can’t eat it straight from the jar.  The amber bottle is nice but I don’t know how necessary it is for such a stable product like coconut oil and the shape of the jar makes it hard to scoop the bottom of the coconut butter. It’s also the most expensive. :(

So that’s my wrap up, folks! But before I sign off I just want to say (1) that I am an affiliate of The Raw Food World and Sunfood and (2) Tropical Traditions sent me a complimentary bottle and offered another one to my readers, but I’m not a Tropical Traditions affiliate and receive no compensation for reviewing their product.

So there’s an extra bottle of Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil waiting in the wings for one of you! So stay tuned for some coconut-covered love!

Hi Lilla, I'm so glad your back to blogging, I enjoy your blog and all its very useful information. I hope your adventure in OZ was wonderful. I am now living on the coast(far south New South Wales) on 6 rural acres and ready to start my own organic garden and medicinal herb garden. I look foward to reading more from you as you were the one who inspired me to delve more into organics & the raw lifestyle. Thanks.
