TRX and RTP

by lilla on April 25, 2009

Cool news! I noticed there’s a TRX Suspension Trainer at my gym so I asked a personal trainer to show me how to use it today. For those that don’t know…

“Suspension Training builds core strength with every exercise by creating an element of instability that calls on your core to provide balance and coordination. Unlike traditional weight training that tends to be linear and follow one plane of movement (sagittal), suspension training encourages multiplanar training (frontal, sagittal, transverse) which integrates all your motions and mimics real life movement. This will bring a muscular balance to your body, increasing performance and preventing injuries.”

Think of gymnastic rings. The TRX is basically straps with handles that force you to really use your muscles not only to push/pull your weight, but also to stabilize the wobbly straps. Ever watch men’s gymnastics when they do the Iron Cross? Can you imagine how much strength and coordination it takes?! (Not that I’ll be doing the Iron Cross anytime soon!) I think gymnasts have the best physiques too – lean, flexible and muscular without being too bulky.

I’m attracted to suspension training because I have preference for bodyweight workouts, like Ashtanga yoga and Crossfit. I showed the trainer at my gym the RTP Transformation System exercise log and he gave me several exercises that I can incorporate and they are tough! It looks easy, but it’s hard trying to control the straps. I loved it, so I will be using a combination of traditional weights and suspension during my RTP System training.

Here’s a trailer of one of the TRX training videos. Tough stuff!

Am so enthused in seeing that you´re doing a TRX Trainer. That´s exactly what Dougal told me about the other day and am thnking (meaning trying…) to buy one. They seem to be exactly what I need/want to do. I am not a weights person, and like you like bodyweights exercises. Need to talk to you more about this….

Great piece of info and I can totally see why the gymnists are so lean. Good for you for taking steps to challenge your body. After a while we all need something fresh and new to accelerate greater results by firing the fat burning and muscle building components.
    Always enjoy reading your posts.

That sounds pretty awesome if you ask me. I am not really a big fan of bodyweight training, but the TRX sounds like an awesome thing to incorporate from time to time.
