Spreading the Raw Food Word

Time for a Lil’ update!

Raw Food Movement Hits Dunsborough

I’m still living in lovely Dunsborough. I teach raw food classes at Samudra, my friend Sheridan’s amazing yoga shala, eco-shop and raw food cafe. 20+ wonderful people attended, all eager and open-minded. We made wheatgrass juice, cracked open a coconut, whipped up some smoothies and then created four different soups. All delicious, if I do say so myself. :) My favorite was the Coconut Curry Soup – sublime!!

On February 13, Victoria and Valya Boutenko of Raw Family fame came out to Samudra to give a lecture on the Green Smoothie Revolution. What a great and inspiring talk! They’ve published quite a few books. I bought a copy of one of their latest called Fresh: The Ultimate Live-Food Cookbook and got it autographed. Love it! Very simple and easy recipes.

Got Some Wheels!

Wheeeee! A Holden stationwagon – good ol’ Aussie family car. So now I can get out and about. It’s still a bit tricky driving on the left side of the road but I’m getting used to it. I’ve had a few cars driving head-on towards me until I realize I’M the one driving head-on towards them in the wrong lane! LOL.

So now that I ‘m mobile, I’ve been getting out to the Farmer’s Markets which I love to do on the weekends. Here’s a clip I filmed of Samudra at the Farmer’s Market.

I found a couple of new beaches too. Meelup is one of my faves now because it’s a crystal clear ’swimming pool’ just five minutes away – gently lapping waves, warm and therapeutic. Ahhhhh…

Fig Season Hits WA

I also found some wild fig trees thanks to my friend. TONS of ripe delicious figgy goodness! Figs are probably my most favorite fruit, right up there with ripe mangoes. YUM!

Crack-A-Mac

Bought some fresh in-shell macadamia nuts too. I’ve been dying to try fresh macs because I’ve heard they supposedly taste MUCH different straight off the tree vs. pre-shelled ones that go rancid quickly, but you need a special nutcracker to open the darn things because they are SO hard. So when I spotted the Crack A Mac, I got one! A simple little vice that gets the job done.

I bought some macs at the farmer’s market and got crackin’. Yum! They were delish. Creamier and fresher tasting. And when you have to crack each one individually, you definitely eat less because (a) it gets tiring after awhile and (b) your body start to register ‘fullness’ because you are eating slower vs. shoveling a handful of nuts in your mouth.

Think I’ll pick up a few Crack-a-Macs as souvenirs to give to friends back home. :)

Hi, I saw you mentioned at In The Raw blog by earthmother, and going through your archive. Synchronistically, I bought the same book Fresh this afternoon at Borders ^_^ I currently eat 70% or so raw, and aspire to go more raw.
BTW where do you live? I'm in Portland, Oregon.
That fig looks great. When I was back in Japan, I could get lots of ripe luscious figs, and it was one of my favorite fruits. In the US, I only get tired semi ripe figs that are so disappointing. . .

    Keep up the great work,

  • Hi Akemi,

I live in Australia right now and the figs are outrageous! It's one of my fave fruits too along with mango. :)
