Reaching New Highs

by lilla on November 14, 2008

Usually Friday is my “weakest” lifting day of my 3xs per week schedule but today was really great. Finally learned the trick with the weightlifting straps – start with your hands forward a little bit on the bar so when you pull them back into position it tightens the strap. Deadlifted 95lbs for 6 reps and hit new highs on squats, pulldown and bench press – yay! Also did a fasted 3.5 mile run early this morning in the drizzly fog. It was eerie in a cool serene way.

Eating was great today too. I’m upping the fat percentage in order to keep me satiated on a lower calorie diet and it’s working. In fact, I’m under my alloted calorie count today. This weekend will be a challenge though. I’m meeting friends tomorrow for lunch and then a family gathering on Sunday. The weekend minefield. I will be put to the test!

I was watching Oprah today and I’m intrigued by this year’s Time Magazine Invention of the Year that was featured on the show. It’s a genetic testing kit developed by 23andMe.com that tells you a whole bunch of information about your health, traits and ancestry. I love this kind of stuff. I find it interesting learning about my past and my body. I think the information is useful because if you know your genetic risk for a disease or illness is higher or lower than average, you can take steps in advance to prevent it. Learning more about my ancestry would also be interesting, since I know very little. I’ll probably wait though because the price keeps dropping as it becomes more mainstream and they are continually adding reports to it. And after a feature in Time and Oprah, sales will probably skyrocket and drive the price down further.

Signing off now. Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Lilla, great job on 95 lb deadlifts! You go girl!

The testing kits are a great idea as long as the insurance companies don't get their greedy hands on the results and use it against us.

    Hey Lilla,
Hows things?! Seems like you are keeping the energy levels up after the group shred. Good work! Not sure if you have thought about this, but maybe try dropping the weight on the deadlifts and lose the straps – i've found that doing this my forearms and wrists have become alot stronger and they have been less prone to injury! When I first started using them I thought they were great, being able to lift more, but in the long run I'm not convinced they are the best idea. Just a thought though :)
    Regards
    Nick
