Another Triple Shred

by lilla on November 5, 2008

Had a solid strength training session this morning. Finally figured out how to use straps for my deadlifts. Even so, I can feel my grip giving way before my strength. I wish my gym had weight-lifting hooks.

Around lunchtime, I went for a slow 2-mile jog and then in the evening, it was athletic training class.

Nutrition has been great – high raw. It’s my favorite way of eating and how I feel best. I’ve been listening to a series of teleseminars entitled “The Truth About Your Food” and I think I will be going back to a vegan diet. I’ve been naturally gravitating towards it anyway. I haven’t eaten fish for at least a month just because it doesn’t appeal to me any more. Even gave up sushi which I used to LOVE, but now have no desire for it. It’s always interesting to me how my palate changes when I switch to high raw.

A few more days to go in the group shred. It’s been fun and re-energizing shredding with the gang. Hope we can keep up this momentum and group energy afterwards.

sounds like your doing great wish I had the time to work out as much as you do but with a 4 month old at home it's kind hard but at least I am doing something. have a great rest of the week Angie

So glad you are feeling well on your nutrition. What really is the difference between raw and vegan? I thought that vegan was like raw, except that you do eat some cooked food here and there. Raw is just that….so, does that mean you will be eating more than just raw? I can´t believe that you are doing so much exercise!

It sounds like more exercise than it is. Weight training is about 40 minutes, Jog is about 20 minutes and AC class is 1 hour. On 2nd thought, I guess 2 hours is more than most people have time for! LOL. :D
I've just been in “Biggest Loser” mentality mode – if they can train for 7 hours, I figure I can do two hours. Funnily, the more active I am, the more I want to keep doing.
I'm sure taking care of a 4 month old is work too. Wait til he starts walking!

Vegan means no animal products whatsoever raw or cooked i.e. no fish, meat, butter, cheese, milk, even honey for some people.

Raw food means not cooked over 115F degrees which CAN include animal products like raw fish, raw (unpasturized) milk, raw cheese, raw eggs, etc.

I've cut out fish, cheese and eggs without really thinking about it. The only animal product i eat now is local goat milk yogurt. It's so goooood!

I can't believe I'm doing this much exercise either! LOL.

Those hooks can be cumbersum, in my opinion, the straps are the best. They do take some getting used to though. I bought some before my accident, I like them. Anyways, Looking good girl… Keep it up.

Tip about straps: Make sure you are wrapping them correctly. If your grip is overhand, the straps get wrapped underhand and vice versa. Cinch them down nice and tight and then hold them in place. If they are not tight you are going to feel your grip giving out before your strength as you describe. Good luck!

I think the trick for me is learning to get my second hand wrapped with one hand! LOL. It's getting easier though.

    Thanks for the tip Mike!
Carlos just sent me these instructions below and now I realize I've been doing it wrong! No wonder the bar was slipping. I'm going to see if I can google some pictures too.

    * Put your hand through the circle made by the strap.
    * With your palms facing up the straps should lay between your thumb and index finger on both hands.
    * Snug the strap tight around the wrist.
    * Place your hands on the bar with the strap hanging towards the floor.
    * Pull the strap under the bar and back over the top, repeat.
    * Twist the bar towards you to tighten the straps.

Tip: Strap in your least coordinated hand first.

Yes, that's exactly right. If your palms are facing up, you loop the strap over the top of the bar and cinch them in. If your palms are facing down, you loop the strap over the bottom of the bar and cinch them in. When done correctly you will find that your grip will hold. I have personally stopped using straps for my deadlifts because I find that my grip is getting stronger by not using them. Good luck!
