Secrets of the Biggest Losers

by lilla on October 30, 2008

I raced home today to be in front of the telly for Oprah’s show on the Weight Loss Secrets of the Biggest Losers. Did you see it? No astounding secrets – eat right, train hard and get your mind straight – but it was an interesting show nonetheless.

Did you know that Jillian used to weigh 170lbs?! I had no idea! They showed pictures of her at her heaviest and I just couldn’t believe it. She’s my height 5′1″ and I can’t begin to fathom weighing 170 lbs!

They brought back some of the previous winners and contestants. Some had maintained their weight loss, while other’s regained a significant amount of weight back unfortunately. Some interesting details:

  • The women eat about 1,200 calories a day and burn up to 4,000 calories
  • The men eat about 1,800 calories a day and work off 6,000 calories
  • They trained up to seven hours per day
  • Ali, first female winner, uses the row machine to get those great arms (note to self)

As far as MY daily double today, I had athletic conditioning class this morning and then a 3-mile run in the evening. I am happy to report that my new running shoes are FAB! No ankle pain, lots of cushioning and support. Yay! Nutrition has been spot on too. Bring on Day 5!

glade your ankle didn't bother you during your run. I got to see some of the show I was surprised that some of them gained the weight back. I also noticed that most of the ones that gained the weight back were the winners. I never knew that about Jillian made thats why she is so hard on them cause she know first hand what its like. wish I had her body any way good luck tomorrow for day 5 take care and thanks for stopping by the other day. I loved Ali! and wanted her to win!! love watching the biggest loser show. it does take work to “maintain” your weight. but it is doable! one must make a truly life changing descion. plus they lost their weight so quickly, which is really not the best way like they do. if they did it the right way (ave. 2 lbs per week) they would probably be more successful at keeping it off!

Hey Lilla, I wonder if it is healthy to lose weight so fast but I admire these people and I hope that their weight stays off. urning 4000 kcal, brutal job with the weight on your hips.

I am happy that your running-shoes are so fantastic, it makes a huge difference, great running-job!

    Hugs.

Lilla, I recorded it and watched it last night when I couldn't sleep. No wonder they're all in tears. 1,200 calories a day + working out all day long. It's insane. Talk about some positive pressure with national TV witnessing your results. Our daily pics don't come close to that pressure. Did you notice how they ALL said you have to change how you view yourself to make the weight loss stick? I thought I heard the ones that keep it off are working out 2 hours a day??

Wow! I don't think I could do the 1200 calorie thing. I'm with Suzette on the losing weight slowly.

SO GLAD to hear the shoes are helping with your ankle. Hey, what about the end of the Carlos video? Is it just on video Wednesdays? I don't know that I can wait that long. :)

You're the best, Buff! Your words always bring a smile to me face. :)

Yes and Ali who has kept it off for 6 months has to work out 2 hours/5x per week plus recreational activity on the 6th day to maintain. I just wonder how sustainable that is and what happens if she lets up a little? It'll be interesting to watch her progress. She's a great female role model of the possibilities that are obtainable with perseverance and hard work! I would love to have her arms and those pull-ups that she does!

    Ah…there's the rub – maintaining.
I know I've lost and gained the same 10-20 lbs more than I care to remember. It IS a lifestyle change and surrounding yourself with a community that is supportive.

I think when you are very overweight you can probably lose weight faster BUT still must be a shock to go from 7hrs of training for 5 months back to your regular life. How do you make that transition without re-gaining? They are already eating the minimum. I dunno. Some of them DID manage to do it though!

You are right – quality running shoes make a WORLD of difference!!

  • KaliLilla

Yes, it seems like a lot of soul searching and catharsis had to happen before they were able to excel and see results.

Ali said she works out 2 hrs/day. I can do that for a mission but not sure it's something I would want to do forever.

I've been editing and posting the video as I go, so no set “airtime.” Hope to have the next segment up this weekend.
