Chocolate Mylk in Disguise

by lilla on September 29, 2008

I was putting up some wallpaper in my KaliLilla You Tube channel to match my new blog decor, when I fell into the YouTube time warp! You know when you start innocently watching one video and then you see a related vid that looks interesting, so you click on that, which inevitably leads to another, so on and so forth. The next thing you know, you’ve spent 2 hours in the YouTube black hole.

Anyway, today I stumbled upon a video of Angela Stokes talking about one of her favorite drinks, raw chocolate mylk. I assumed she was talking about a raw cacao nut mylk recipe, so I was a bit surprised and intrigued to hear this coming from her since she is a pretty pure raw foodist.

Until I heard the recipe that is! Spinach, romaine and carrots, three ingredients that’s it. Now I LOVE green juice, but c’mon…this is supposed to taste like chocolate mylk?! So of course I had to try it. I got the ingredients last night and broke out my trusty Omega juicer this morning. WOW – it does remind me of chocolate milk! It won’t fool my niece but I LOVED it.

I used 3 romaine hearts, 3 carrots and 3 cups of spinach which made about 2 cups of juice. Out of curiosity, I punched the ingredients into TheDailyPlate.com and this drink has 12 grams of protein!! I think that’s awesome! I’m trying to eat about 12-15g of protein with each of my 6 meals a day so this is perfect. It would be hard to eat all that produce as a salad, but as 2 cups of juice? No problemo.

TIP: If you try it, juice the carrots first and then put the pulp aside. Then you can run the carrot pulp through a twin gear juicer again adding nut and raisins and you have the beginnings of raw carrot cake. Then spice it up with cinnamon and nutmeg – SO GOOD!

  • I think you were the one who turned me on to adding spinach to all my shakes. (Actually, I think it all started with that grapefruit/garlic/spinach recipe.) Now, I add spinach to almost all of my fruit shakes and continue to be amazed at how little the flavor changes. It feels like sneaking massive amount of nutrients in without my tastebuds noticing. :-)
  • Exactly! It's like when moms try to hide brussel sprouts in the mashed potatoes. Not quite as imperceptible, but you know what I mean. ;)
  • Haha Juli! It is funny. :D

I think most people who don't drink veggie juices, won't think it tastes like chocolate at ALL because they are used to real chocolate. BUT for a vegan who doesn't eat chocolate, the juice does have a bit of a chocolatey flavor. Strange I know but it's all matter of what the palate becomes used to.
  • Thanks Lynda. I'll be curious to hear if you can detect the "chocolate" flavor. LOL. Regardless, it's a delicious green juice!

p.s. Do you have a twin gear juicer? Or are you making a blended smoothie?
  • ...spinach tasting like chocolate...if you blend it with salad.leaves and carots. WHO MADE UP THIS???

Amazing, Lilla! Imagine two greenie-beanie-freaks standing next to each other on a cocktail-party talking about the green stuff in the glasses in their hands..."oh, it tastes like the dark-truffle-chocolate from cote d'or" ...and funny how it is the other one agrees! I would have thought they "smoked" something before they went to the party.

    :-D

I just now read this, and will try it this very morning. Was waffling about whether or not to have fruit or toast, so will go with your mylk! Can´t wait. Have everything to do it with, so will toast my good health to you Lilla! Think I too will go to YouTube and check out Angela Stokes....there´s just so much out there to learn! Your blog has to be the best out there!

  • It is bizarre! It's not a dead ringer for chocolate mylk, but I can definitely see why she says so.

    Thanks Debbie!

Lilla, would never have thought that would taste like chocolate milk. Bizarre! Love the new look on your site, btw.
