Insider Tip from My Health Food Store

by lilla on September 15, 2008

I made a great discovery today at my local health food shop.

Except for some herbs I don’t like to take any supplements, but I have been taking a multivitamin to make sure my body isn’t missing anything that might cause “cravings.” The brand that I like is called “New Chapter.” I used to work at a health food store when I lived in Kauai and New Chapter really stood out as a quality product and company. The mutivitamin has probiotics and is organic which of course, usually means expensive.

So today when I ran out of vitamins, I went to buy some at the Vitamin Shoppe. The salesperson saw me holding the New Chapter bottle and directed me to the Vitamin Shoppe label. Being the “brand snob” that I am, I said no thanks. LOL. Then he told me that it’s the exact same product as the one I was holding because New Chapter brands it under the Vitamin Shoppe name for the store and it was 1/3 less expensive. So I looked at all the ingredients and percentages. Yep, EXACTLY the same! Very sneaky but cool. Not only was it 1/3 cheaper, but when you buy one Vitamin Shoppe product, you get another for 1/2 price. Not so with the New Chapter brand. So I ended up saving money and learning a great insider tip!

Before, I also ignored most salespeople in a health food store as they tended to push products at you. But sometimes, I do talk with them and discover new things like you did.

thats cool we also try to avoid sales people in most stores for the reason that Ron mentioned. Hope your having a good week Angie

This is called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing). The original manufacturer sells its product with branding and packing of the customer. Say you would open a store called Lilla's Healthy Stuff(tm), you could call them and order 10,000 units of New Chapter in your own packing ("Lilla's Finest"). One could then say that Lilla's Finest is an OEM version of New Chapter.

All this is so interesting. Thanx ALEX for the insider info. There are NO vitamin shopps in Madrid. None. You usually buy them in the one department store, but limited stock. I order mine usually from PURITANS PRIDE online. Anybody know if they carry something close that being like Lilla´s Finest?

A physician at the University of Pittsburgh Alternative Medicine Family Clinic told me to buy Twin Labs brand of vitamins, which I do. And my sister is a teaching M.D. and she has heard the same thing about Twin Lab brands at conferences.
But, if you are vegan, Twin Labs may not be for you because the capsules are gelatin, I believe.

    Cheers!
