Raw Food Diet Books Reviewed

by lilla on August 7, 2008

In today’s video, I go through some of the books in my raw food library and discuss my opinion of each one. Watch and find out which ones make the top of my list for beginning raw foodist. Books discussed are by authors such as David Wolfe, Gabriel Cousens, Alissa Cohen, Juliano, Renee Underkoeffler, Victoria Boutenko and more.

I’ve also added some of my favorite raw food links to my sidebar:

  • David Wolfe’s uStream Channel – Live Webinars
  • Give It to Me Raw – Raw Food Blog
  • Give It To Me Raw – Raw Food Community
  • Raw Food Talk – Free Raw Food Forum
  • Raw Guru – Raw Food Store

Here are links to three of the books discussed Living on Live Food by Alissa Cohen, Eating for Beauty by David Wolfe and the Complete Book of Raw Food by various authors.

Hi Lilla, great video! Loved your honesty.

Will remember your recommendations when I purchase my next book. I just purchased Fresh by the Boutenko children (now I believe they’re in their 20’s).

Thanks Debbie! Didn’t realize the Boutenko children are already in their 20s!

Great video, and one that helped me a lot. My first (and only) book is Green For Life, which you reviewed. Think I might buy that book by David Wolfe *Eating for Beauty*. Was great of you to do that video as know you have so much experience on all this! So much to learn out there….

    Thanks Lynda,

I think you’ll really like “Eating for Beauty.” I bought it years ago, and i STILL like to refer to and read it.

    Kali-
Would you consider blogging about how to ‘juice’? I know you mentioned this a while back, and I thought of juicing, and of you, today, when I realized there is no way I can eat enough spinach and chard to raise my magnesium levels…so I ordered a juicer…but any advice would be greatly appreciated, if you have time. My biggest fear is that I’ll put a bunch of greens in, and a disgusting juice will come out, and that will be the last time I use it…I think I better start with diguising veggies in fruit juices…Zoey

Good idea Zoey. What kind of juicer did you get?

I got the Breville Juice Fountain Compact-yes, it was cheap ($100) and I may be sorry. But the compact size fit my kitchen, and the price fit my budget…so we’ll see. I also ordered Green for Life, and 2 books by a Cherie Calbome on juicing for health. And I ordered 3 packs of chard for the winter garden! On the Amazon site, in one of the book reviews, someone wrote, ‘well, most of us will drink a shot of foul tasting wiskey or hard liquor because we want the relaxation that comes with it…what’s so different about doing a shot of veggies and getting all our nutrients”. I thought that was funny, but also true. So, any ideas you may have, all are welcome! Zoey

I had a Breville Juice Fountain when I lived in Arizona and loved it! Unfortunately, it’s sitting in my dad’s garage in California right now along with some of my other stuff when I moved.

I think I will do a vid on juicing Zoey in a few weeks. Thanks for the idea!

For the Breville, harder fruit works better like apples and pears vs. mango or papaya. For a base, I think cucumbers and celery are amazing. (Try to find organic UNWAXED cucumbers so you can juice them with the skin where the silicon is.) People say that the Breville doesn’t handle leafy greens too well, but I was still able to get some juice out of them. I like romaine or spinach with a little parsley or cilantro. A very simple and yummy juice to start though is apple, cucumber and romaine. Very refreshing and light!

Thank you for the ideas! I was hoping to juice swiss chard and spinach, so I’ll just have to see how the machine handles those…but your recommendations sound better! I’ll keep checking for tips you offer! Zoey

Swiss chard and spinach are great choices! The more green the juice the better.

Right now I’m trying to avoid fruit sugar, so I’ve been drinking cucumber, celery, lemon with stevia leaves. Makes a great green lemonade.
