227 – Repurposing my Ashtanga Yoga Book

by lilla on July 29, 2008

In 2005, I wrote a book after returning from a month-long trip to Mysore, India to practice Ashtanga yoga with Sri K Pattabhi Jois. It ’s a travel book for people like me who go to India solo, not knowing what to expect living in a third world country. Here is a link to it on Amazon: Ashtanga City – The Westerner’s Guide to Mysore.

The book is now 3 years old and some of the content is dated, so I’ve decided to update what I can and create an Ashtanga blog out of it until I’m able to return to Mysore. My purpose is to get the information out there, update the website regularly with news of what’s happening in the Ashtanga community and hopefully make some income from advertising.

I’ve had to relearn HTML plus learn new things like CSS. Things sure have changed ALOT since I worked in corporate America! Now I remember those long hours at my desk punching away at my computer. Makes my life living in a cabin on a farm in Kauai look appealing again. LOL. Although climbing papaya trees in 90 degree weather isn’t exactly a walk in the park either.

Anyway, it is exciting to learn new things and force oneself out of one’s comfort zone. I’m having fun with the creative process of designing and writing content and the feeling after a job accomplished is always very rewarding.

Prior to starting the Ashtanga project, I was redesigning my current Kali Lilla blog. But now that I’ve discovered Wordpress, I think I will be redesigning my redesign! I just love making more work for myself, don’t you? But since I’ve already done most of the work on design #1, I think I will launch it anyway in August for the interim until I am able to get to work on design #2 after the Ashtanga project is up and running.

On my Kali Lilla blog, I will be trying to generate a revenue stream as well, though I will not be advertising as heavily as I am on my Ashtanga yoga project. I love blogging and it would be wonderful if I could make a living from it too. I just want my readers to be aware that I will be conscious of keeping the advertising to a minimum.

OK, I’ll stop droning on now. I’ve been operating on very little sleep lately and I think my eyes are permanently glazed over from staring at my computer screen all day. Now I know how Adam: RTP-Blog-2.com must feel writing the RTP system!

SHREDDER+ ALERT: I ‘m thinking of setting up another Shredder + Challenge for the month of August for most miles by an individual. That way we can see our individual miles instead of just men and women group totals. What do you think?

    hi Debbie,

During the time I was writing it, it didn't feel like that much fun! LOL. But I'm glad I did it. It's a little book but I was surprised at how much work it took.

I can totally relate to what Adam must be going through right now. Writing is a labor of love.

    Lynda,
The new challenge is up and my guess is you will be at the head of the pack! :)

Sometimes, I feel like I'm seventy! LOL. I just basically decided a long time ago that I was going to do whatever I wanted and go wherever I wanted to be happy! I want to experience and do AS MUCH as I can or want everyday. Makes life a fun, adventurous ride!

    Andrew,

Do you have a WP blog too?

Flexibility - start with a beginner yoga class or a beginnner yoga dvd. It's really so worth it to stretch. Feels great to be flexible. Little by little. No need to get your leg behind your head...yet. ;)

Thanks for the thumbs up! Crossing my fingers that the new yoga blog will be successful. :D

Lilla, I thought I heard mention of you writing a book and there it is! How much fun you must have had writing and having it published!

You surprise me yet again. Will check out your book in a minute. I would rather like the new Challenge+...would make it more interesting to see how we each are doing. Think that´s what motivated me on the last one. You don´t have much time tho....
You know Lilla, with all the things you have done it seems you must be 70 years old. How did you do all that so fast? talk about an interesting life!

    Hi Lilla

I have used WordPress on a few of my blogs and love it. I fall in to the same trap as you making extra work for myself. There are always so many more things that you can add to a blog (especially WordPress).

I am envious of the flexibility you have on the photo on your blog. I have so little flexibility in my hips and hamstrings and don't really know where to start.

Cool Meredith! I'll set it up. Book is a matter of cutting and pasting content. The html/css coding is a bear though! Still fun though - I love a challenge.

LMK when you find it again Retro. I would like to try to make almond milk kefir again. Thanx!

    Hi Larry,

It comes and goes. Lately, it's been mostly gone! haha...

Lilla, You seem to have boundless energy. You are the energizer bunny!
  • Retro
    Hi!

I found the Kefir online but forgot where:(

Sounds great Lilla...count me in on the additional challenge. Your book project sounds like a lot of hard work...but hopefully it will pay off for you...literally!
