208 -Be You

by lilla on July 11, 2008

The below excerpt comes from Lifehack.org. It made me stop and think, so I thought I would share it with you today.

“While it’s normal to want to be needed, liked, loved and important to others, it’s also crucial to get clear about who you are and what you stand for, and to live a life consistent with those values.

When it comes to this issue, you might want to ask yourself:

Do I speak the truth (while still exercising care, wisdom and understanding) even if it’s not popular to do so?

Do I live a life which is consistent with my core values?

Do I operate with integrity?

Do I believe that my motives are good?

Is it my goal to be a positive influence in the lives of others?

Am I happy to disagree with people I like?

Do I (really) like me?

If you answered no more often than yes, you may want to make a few changes. If you really want to be liked, then stop trying to be liked and start being you.”

    Yes, thanks for sharing Lilla!

Cool post. I love the questions. I was doing great on the answers up until the part where it asks about being happy to disagree with people I like. haha I finally got to the point where I actually will admit I disagree, but I doubt I’m at the part where I could say I’m “happy” about it. For me it’s more I range from mildly uncomfortable to pretty okay with disagreeing with people I like. I’ve got a little way to go on that one, but I like the way the question puts a focus on what it really means to be yourself. Way cool.

You’re challenge is lighting the shreddersphere on fire. As a person who has opted not to participate, I’ve got to say it’s really motivating anyway. I think it’s really awesome and those badges rock.

Yes, it’s a good list of questions to ask oneself from time to time.

    Christy,
For me, it depends on the person I’m talking to. Most of my friends are pretty open-minded and like a good intellectual debate and aren’t offended if we disagree. I personally love a good match of wits!
But some are very sensitive and take any disagreement as a personal attack on their character. So I learn when and with whom I can be brutally frank with, and those that I have to watch what I say or not say anything at all. But I find that those “insecure” people naturally drop out of my life slowly as I attract those that I truly enjoy being my honest self with.
The exception being some family members whom I LOVE TO DEATH but I could never talk to about some of my deep core or alternative beliefs. They would consider my alternative views as a put-down of what they hold to be true.

    Hey Lilla,

I love your today’s post, it is exactly at which i am working and I want to really like myself (again). Furthermore I agree that I also cannot be 100 % honest with family-members and I am not because I don’t wnat to hurt them. Is this a side-effect of the blood-is-thicker-then-water-effect? I also find myself somtimes using other methods, words, tactics to communicate with my loved ones/close family

I am EXTREMELY impressed by your mileage, YOU ROCK, Lilla!

Exactly Juli – blood is thicker than water and sometimes exercising extra “care, wisdom and understanding” is necessary.

My mileage?! Yours blows me away! I’m in awe of you. I think you will win a trophy!
