205 – Weekly nutrition tip: the thermic effect of protein

Tip #13: Protein for Fat Burning

by Dr. John Berardi of Precision Nutrition

Protein is by far the most thermogenic of the macronutrients (protein, carbohydrate, and fat). Due to the high metabolic costs of processing it, protein provides fewer storable kcal. The thermic effect of a mixed meal is about 10% of intake, while the thermic effect of protein per se is more like 25-30%. That could mean reving up your metabolism by 200 kcal just from your 200-gram (800 kcal) protein intake.

*************************************************************************
Bring on the protein! I can use all the thermic metabolic burning I can get! And maybe one day I’ll be able to do a muscle-up like this show-off hard body athlete…my new hero from the 2nd Annual Crossfit Games this past weekend. Wouldn’t mind having those abs too…

Or these abs! Dana Torres, 41 years old, has a two-year-old daughter, and won her first Olympic medal, a relay gold, in 1984. She just successfully completed her bid to make a fifth Olympic team after winning the 100 freestyle earlier in the week to secure her spot in Beijing.

She could stop a bullet with that washboard!

*********LILLA’S JULY 2008 GOALS*********

Tough run this morning. Just wasn’t feeling it. Got through my 8 intervals and then did a measly 2-mile lackluster jog followed by a walk. Soccer camp started today and the track field was crawling with little kids. The soccer balls are bigger than they are…so cute!

Dude…I was just thinking of the same thing last night!!!! Did you see the Swimming trials yesterday, Kali!? D. Torres just tore it up yesterday. For a 41 year old – that’s freakin’ A-M-A-Z-I-N-G to beat people that are young enough to be her teenage daughter. She has a great physique…something to die for! Not literally of course. But whew!

Can’t wait to see her in action in Beijing.

Dana Torres, is just the beginning. I really hope we have an entire generation of women who refuse to be neatly label and placed in a box call old and useless. Oops I’m forty, time to give up on myself. This message must be changed. Thanks for sharing.
