Day 145 – Fishy Results

by lilla on May 8, 2008

Here is a tally of the responses to yesterday’s post. Out of 9 people including myself, there are:

  • 1 person taking flax oil
  • 2 people taking Udo’s Oil
  • 5 people taking fish oil
  • 1 taking neither

Benefits noted include:

  • muscle recovery & reduced soreness
  • slight increase in metabolic activity
  • sense of well-being
  • difference in mood
  • mental clarity

I used to take fish oil until a rep for Flora (Udo’s Oil manufacturer) came to talk to the employees of a health food store where I used to work. She basically stated the following:

“Fish oils are very difficult to work with. The ‘fishy’ flavor of encapsulated oils or cod liver oil is actually rancidity. Fresh fish does not have this taste or smell. I also have concerns about fish liver oils. They are most likely to contain (and concentrate) highly toxic industrial chemicals such as PCBs.” – www.udoerasmus.com

Granted the above quote comes from Udo’s camp which is a competitor of the fish oil industry, but my instinct tells me that there is probably some validity to this statement. Fish is extremely delicate and to extract oil “cleanly” can’t be easy. When the rep described the process that the fish oil manufacturers must go through (something along the lines of using strong cleansing agents) I was totally turned off. Maybe I’m just too easily swayed. Anyway, I have an unopened jar of fish oil in my fridge if anyone is interested – LOL.

For fish eaters, Udo made this statement:

“I prefer toro (belly) sushi from albacore (white) tuna as my source of EPA and DHA. Salmon, mackerel, sardines, and rainbow trout are other good sources.”

Thank you everyone for contributing your comments to yesterday’s post. My intention was not to dissuade anyone from taking fish oil – I’m just interested in seeing what people are doing and starting a topic for conversation. Please feel free to reply in response to this.

I used to take fish oil…but fish is common in an Asian diet so I get mine pretty much naturally anyway.

Also, I noticed with fish oil – urine looked yellower while I was on it. Absorption qualities of the capsule good? Not sure. But the health benefits are great (cardiovascular, recovery from certain injuries)… My .02

Lilla, I swear I posted yesterday that I take fish oil (4 capsules per day). Not sure what happened to my post.

My DH does so also and along with the fish oil, he added exercise and a vegeterian diet and has reduced cholesterol from 225 to 167and triglicerides from over 400 to 138.
