Day 119 – To Wheatgrass or Not?

by lilla on April 12, 2008

Since Sauchagirl asked me about wheatgrass juice yesterday, I thought I would post a link to this related article on Detox Diets that was published in the Tucson Citizen on March 19, 2007 and featured a picture of yours truly whipping up a cool, smooth wheatgrass juice. This is taken in the greenhouse that I used to manage for the Tree of Life in Patagonia, AZ.

Here is the section on the Tree of Life Viewpoint:

“Physical toxins accumulate in many ways: The food we eat, the environment we live in and daily emotional stresses all contribute to stored toxins in our system. We have found juice fasting to be the best and safest method to allow for cleansing while still maintaining energy and rejuvenation levels. These programs promote autolysis, which involves the body digesting its own dead and dying cells. Juice feasting (green juice) can help people who are overweight, have arthritis, acid reflux, chronic pain, high cholesterol, hypertension and heart disease.

Detox method: It specializes in vegan live food nutrition, spiritual fasts and meditation. It also offers Personal Detoxification Programs where guests can do medically supervised juice fasts and feasts.”

Loved your article today as always. Just read all of the site you mentioned, and came up that 3-day fruit diet being so logical. Am going to buy the EatStopEat diet tonite and read up on that. Fasting must be the next step up for weight loss and de-toxing. Gotta try it…

I know this is more about detox, but the Universe keeps doling out the word wheatgrass since I caught this second cold. Gotta get my butt to Jamba Juice for a shot. I totally know what you meant about laying low a little when you rolled back into town. It’s what I’ve been doing, too. I want to see everybody, but I want to get stuff done, too.

Lilla, do you make wheatgrass juice at home?

    Suzette and Lynda,
The best and easiest way to “detox” is just to incorporate as much organic vegetables into your diet, preferably raw, high fiber. Fruits also, but secondarily because of high sugar content. Fresh vegetables juices are awesome too.
I have mixed thoughts on “detox diets”, so I don’t want to advise you to do anything extreme without researching it thoroughly. Tree of Life’s philosophy is the extremest of extreme.

    Hi Christy,
Wheatgrass juice is great for the immune system and for your cold. Jamba Juice does not use organic wg. And since wg juice is SO concentrated, I would try and find a local health food store/bar instead. Should be pretty easy in CA. Some Whole Foods even have juice bars.

    Debbie,

I used to grow my own at home but it’s labor intensive. Even buying wg trays and juicing it at home is a pain because it takes at least a 1/4 of a try to squeeze a couple of ounces. Much easier to find a local organic health food store/cafe and get the occasional shot.
I was spoiled at the Tree of Life. Since I ran the greenhouse, I would help myself to mega doses practically every day – sometimes up to 16oz/day!

Thanks Lilla, Very helpful. I may try and make a recipe up for a “Super foods” type smoothie. Maybe some blueberries and ginger, cinnamon and plain yogurt. Not sure quite yet but feel I need to incorporate some kind of smoothie like that into my plan that kind of hits all the “MVPs” of diet. Do you have any great suggestions for that?
