It’s Not a Game, I Swear

by lilla on March 15, 2008

Every morning that I set out for my run, I look at the distance ahead of me and think “it’s too far to the ocean, I’ll just go half way today.” And then the next thing I know, I’m at the edge of the cliff as if transported through time with vague recollection of how I got there. Blissful!

This morning, there were a lot more joggers on the lighthouse path. I guess it’s because it’s Saturday and the sun is rising earlier. I met a cute guy who ran with me for a while and then I got a catcall from a passerby in his car. It’s been awhile since I’ve felt remotely attractive, so it was a pleasant surprise. Of course, I had to act sufficiently annoyed and ignore him. Haha! I guess I do still play my old games but actually it’s not so much a game as a necessity which reminded of a conversation I had with a friend of mine on this very topic.

My friend who we’ll call “Testosterone in a Bottle (TiB)” although by looking at him you would never think it, is one of those guys who oozes charisma as soon as you get to know him. Anyway, we were having a conversation one evening and he said that he didn’t understand why women get annoyed when men look at them or pay them a compliment. He says he can’t help himself because he loves women and that he thinks it would be flattering.

And he’s right – it IS flattering but sometimes if you “give an inch, they’ll take a yard.” In other words, if you give the slightest acknowledgment to a catcall or look, it can often be interpreted as “take me now!” leading potentially to unwanted attention. TiB argued that his intentions were purely just a compliment and by no means whatsoever a come on. So I asked him if a beautiful woman responded to his “compliment” with just a hint of a smile instead of ignoring him, what would he do? And he laughed and said, “I would be all over her!” EXACTLY my point! So there you go – it’s not a coy game, it’s a necessity…in most instances.

So there is definitely something about jogging outdoors that makes me want to write whatever is on my mind as soon I get home and that my dear friends, was today’s drivel. I guess it’s all the stream of thoughts that flow in and out of my brain in a semi-conscious sort of way during the delicious quiet monotony of my morning ritual.

I’m on my way now to do some errands and hopefully get to Waimea Canyon. I’ll be back later with my shredding update.

Loved your blog today. Made me think of what would happen to you if you were here in Spain. You would have catcalls one after another. Some even say beautiful things, some rhyme, but as you say, not one hint of an acknowledgment. Do tell us about the Canyon!

    Hey Lilla,
I go away for a couple of days and I know ther is always plenty to catch up on in your Blog. Your food pics look great, very pro. Maybe I’ll have a go at uploading one of my food efforts just to see how you upload pics on these blogs. Maybe I will go for my own reveal with you all, the reveal of my first pic that I am so dreading, what do you think?

Tax is such a bore, Im an bean-counter for my sins (accountant!) over the pond here in England. Tax laws are a little different over here, but we still have to pay them, and they are far too high too!!

    Hey Lynda,
I lived in Paris for 6 months and you’re right – I do remember the men being extremely aggressive.

I did make it the canyon today and will post soon.

    Hi Kelv!

I think that’s a great idea – posting your Day 1 picture on our reveal day. The first one is the hardest and then after that it’s smooth sailing! We’re all here to support you! :)

Hi Lilla, your morning jogs sure are more eventful than mine (maybe because I’m on a treadmill!). It sounds great to be able to run in the morning, outdoors and fresh air!

    Hi Adam,

Yes, running outdoors is a WORLD of difference than on the treadie. Never thought I would be a “runner.” Now 5K and 10K races have crossed my mind. Maybe even a marathon someday? Who knows!

p.s. I’m sure if you were running outside, you would be getting catcalls too! ;)

Lilla, great post and totally accurate!

Lilla, boy, you are right about the catcalls. You never know if their intentions and women have to play it safe, especially when alone.

Wish I could run outside. The snow has almost all melted and we now have mud.
